Adriano Machado, born in Feira de Santana, Brazil, in 1986, is a multidisciplinary visual artist. His work explores themes of identity, memory, and territory through photography, video, and object-based installations. His practice is driven by his investigation of cultural narratives, fiction, and history, examining the intersections between lived experience and Afro-inventive spaces. His work critically reflects on the human condition, questioning notions of displacement, belonging, and transformation in contemporary society.
Holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB) and a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts from Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), Machado is currently pursuing a PhD in Visual Arts at UFBA. In 2024, he was a Visiting Researcher at New York University (NYU) in the Department of English. His academic research serves as the theoretical foundation of his artistic production, enriching his practice with conceptual depth and historical reflection.
Machado’s work has received national and international recognition, earning awards such as the Main Prize at the Salons of Visual Arts of Bahia (2013) and Special Mentions in 2011 and 2014. His pieces have been featured in solo exhibitions, including Orimar at Centro Cultural São Paulo (2021) and Contos Fotográficos at Museu de Arte da Bahia (2018).
He has participated in prestigious group exhibitions, including Encruzilhadas da Arte Afro-Brasileira at CCBB São Paulo (2023), 14th Dak’Art Biennale in Dakar, Senegal (2022), and MUAMBA: Brazilian Traces of Movement in London, UK (2023). His work has also been shown at the XXI Bienal Internacional de Cerveira in Portugal (2020) and the Valongo Festival Internacional da Imagem in Brazil (2019).
His artistic trajectory has been further supported by notable residencies, such as Inclusartiz in Rio de Janeiro (2023/24), Latitude Chicago (2022), and Pivô Pesquisa in São Paulo (2020). His projects are included in public and private collections, cementing his position as a relevant voice in contemporary art.
Currently he lives and works between Feira de Santana and Alagoinhas, Bahia, Brazil. Deeply committed to education and cultural development, he has conducted workshops and lectures in Brazil and internationally, promoting art as a tool for dialogue and social transformation.
