Juan M. Quiñones | Old School
Solo Show – Booth 1

Juan Miguel Quiñones is one of the young contemporary Spanish sculptors who works with marble, recovering techniques that have been valued in ancient times, but have now disappeared. The sculptures are made with the ancient hard stone technique, a Renaissance technique at its peak during the later years of this era. The work consists of the inlay of semiprecious stones within the marble, as well as, the so-called polychrome tableroes of the great European palace tables.

About the project –  The aesthetics of violence

Artist: Éder Oliveira

Éder Oliveira’s conceptual agenda speaks to the genocide of indigenous populations and descendants of slaves; the exclusion of communities inhabiting the forests and riverbanks; slavery; the congealed urban masses living in increasing poverty; deforestation; regional inequalities; the social deficit of neoliberalism in education; and cultural uprooting.

The exhibited works from the series “Red Pages” are portraits that accentuate the painting’s political semantics and problematize the colorblind artist’s optical point of view.

Oliveira’s portraits in “Red Pages” are symbols of the lack of positive government action to benefit these people. They are the symbols of the massacre of subjectivity, the misery of individual identities, and the reduction of the individual to almost nothing. Oliveira’s body of work thus points to the collapse of modernity.
