2023 Reiners Contemporary Art, Estampa, Madrid, ES'The Battle of Eros' comprises a series of sculptures in which Smék Setúbal expand their research with a conceptual approach deepened during their residency at Reiners Contemporary Art in the city of Marbella. During this period, the duo works for the first time with ceramics, and the resulting images always appear fragmented, with one element displaced. This deliberate disjunction challenges the conventional integrity of the image, presenting itself as a collection of sculptures intentionally marked by a sense of brokenness or incompleteness. This aspect evokes the complexities and nuances inherent in interpersonal relationships and intimacy.
While the pursuit of perfection remains a guiding principle, imperfection is recognized as an intrinsic element of our human nature. With high temperature Grés ceramic composites, a material close to the texture of the archaeological ruins of marble or stone on which the research is based, this piece highlights the incompleteness inherent in the human condition.
